The presidential election is over, which means residents of the battlegrounds we have covered for the past several months can join the rest of the states in enjoying attack-ad free commercial breaks and keeping their phones plugged in without risking constant pollster or campaign calls.

It also means the end of our posts here on The 12.

Thank you for following our student journalists’ coverage from the swing states across the country. We’ll see you in 2016.

Walker scrambles to comply with Obamacare:

President Obama’s re-election and the return of the Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate have solidified Obamacare as law. After months of holding out for Obama’s defeat, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) and other state officials have seven days to decide how to hand Affordable Health Care Act before the federal deadline, Nov. 16.

Voters in Milwaukee are currently waiting up to two and a half hours to cast their ballots. With just a few hours until polls close, the ballots being cast in Wisconsin right now have the potential to decide the election.

The presidential candidates are giving Wisconsin just as much attention as larger election-deciding states like as Ohio and Florida in the final days of the campaign.

With voters in the state seemingly split down the middle, a raspy-voiced Obama made his second appearance in Milwaukee and brought a few friends with him.

Obama was joined by state Democrats such as Mayor Tom Barrett, Sen. Herb Kohl, Rep. Gwen Moore and Rep. Tammy Baldwin and multi-platinum artist Katy Perry.

The President assured a crowd of nearly 20,000 supporters of the importance of their votes in this election.

“If we win Wisconsin, we’ll win this election,” Obama said.

The President is stop in Wisconsin once more before voters go to the polls, this time with “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen in Madison.

Marquette Law School Poll shows Democrats ahead in Wisconsin

The final pre-election results from the Marquette Law School Poll show President Obama and Rep. Tammy Baldwin, Senate candidate, ahead of their opponents with Election Day just four days away.

After months of riding the Wisconsin polling roller coaster, the latest results show Obama with a significant lead over Romney, 51 percent to 43 percent. Professor Charles Franklin, director of the poll, attributes the jump in results to the candidates’ performances in the debates.

After a tie in poll results two weeks ago, Baldwin has also moved ahead of her Republican opponent, former Gov. Tommy Thompson, 47 percent to 43 percent.

Five people filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board in Madison on Monday over an email sent by an employer to his employees regarding the presidential election.

Rite Hite CEO Michael White last week wrote in an email to employees that they should “understand the personal consequences to them of having our tax rates increase dramatically if President Obama is re-elected.”

The son of a Wisconsin State Sen. Neil Kedzie (R-Elkhorn) was hospitalized after defending a Mitt Romney lawn sign in front of his house.

Sean Kedzie, 22, awoke Oct. 19 to a noise outside his home in Whitewater, Wis. to discovered two men removing his yard sign. After confronting the men, Kedzie was tackled, choked and struck repeatedly about the face and head, according to his father.

Brutal 9/11 ad takes center stage in Wisconsin Senate race

Eleven years after Sept. 11, 2001, that day’s terrorist attacks are rearing their head in a major way in one of the hottest Senate races in the country.

Former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson’s (R) campaign today launched a brutal new ad attacking Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D) for voting against a 2006 bill commemorating the fifth anniversary of 9/11.

Thompson campaign scrambles after weekend gaffes

Former Wisconsin governor and U.S. Senate hopeful Tommy Thompson has been known for putting his foot in his mouth in the past. But this past weekend, he had some help from his son.

Jason Thompson, 38 was caught on camera at a Republican event calling for Obama to be sent “back to Chicago, or Kenya.”

Tommy Thompson also had his own verbal flounder over the weekend, calling his opponent, Rep. Tammy Baldwin, “anti-Jewish.”

The Thompson campaign later apologized and clarified for these missteps. Read more from The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

“I’ve narrowed it down to two major issues. The first being healthcare because it is so far-reaching. It affects many different kinds of people, from young people on their parents’ insurance to elderly people benefiting from Medicare. We’re on the cusp of very big changes in that area right now. The second most important issue to me this election is marriage equality. The president coming out in favor of it was a very big step forward. Clearly there were political motivations behind that announcement, but that doesn’t change how historic it was or how much it means to people.”

Former Democratic Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold visited Marquette University for the law school’s “On the Issues” segment with Mike Gousha. During his visit Feingold addressed campaign finance reform, American exceptionalism, foreign relations and the current presidential election.
